Quick experimentation with different browsers...

MOZILLA:
Getting odd results -- seems mostly better than IE but
Javascript/DHTML doesn't work.  Yes, I've set it on from
the preferences.  For example, on one of my more frequently-
visited sites (http://www.clubcobra.com), there is a horizontal
menu bar overlayed on the main page that is the primary
source of navigation.  Does not appear with Mozilla.   I
did find a theme called "Little Mozilla" which is really
nice for minimal clutter on the screen.

OPERA:
Tried this too -- the menubar appears there, but does weird
things (like the menubar outline disappears if the page is
scrolled).  Also adds in a large blank space before the
content starts on the page.  On another page, the white text
on black background doesn't show up.  This is too bad, because
this browser has some very nice features and is the fastest
by a mile!

NETSCAPE:
Haven't tried Netscape again and probably won't since my
last experience with it was that it was really, really slow.

IE:
This is what I've been using so far, since it came with the
OS.  Not bad -- it works, has the nice 'click' sound feature
when a link is hit.

So far, I've not found any settings that would "correct" the
problems listed above on any of the browsers, so if anyone
knows why, let me know.  Any others to experiment with?

I get a button navigation bar on my mozilla 1.0, and have no problems
with java, javascript, or fully w3c compliant pages (some 'DHTML' is
specific to IE and is not a standard).  Java still requires a seperate
java runtime installation, and you then need to move the plugin files
from the runtime directory to the mozilla plugins directory.  The new
installation program seems to pick up most plugins you have lying around
though (acrobat, flash, shockwave, java, etc)

If you've ever installed mozilla before you need to uninstall it, then
reinstall.  The installation program does not take care of some old
installation files which may cause browser problems.

You might be better off choosing a browser based on mozilla but not from
mozilla, though.  There is a list of them on mozilla.org.

When a page does not work well with a certain browser it is not necessarily
due to a problem with a browser. Many times it is because the page designer
used a browser specific code and tested her page only with a specific
browser.

In the example that you mention, the menu is drawn by the JavaScript file
http://www.clubcobra.com/menu.js that has a lot of browser specific code
(look for 'ie'
or 'if (ie)')

The bottom line is that when a browser gets a critical mass of user base,
page
designers start to make sure their pages renders well on that browser.

BTW, some of the Mozilla features I like are the Tab based windowing (you
can have
multiple pages in a single window) and the flexible cookie control (you can
tell
the browser to expire all cookies after let's say 7 days).

typically the page has been coded with MS FrontPage by someone who does not
know HTML :)

Keep sending emails to the webmaster complaining that your browser does not
render their pages well. :) Don't forget to tell them what your browser is
though. Eventually the message gets through that what they do is not optimum
for everyone.

As an OT to the OT, does anyone know how to get frontpage to dump an
entire web in plain HTML? MY girlfriend wants to publish a site she made
for a class on my non frontpage server. I can only seem to get the
program to output pages individually. Plus none of the fancy things like
hover buttons work. Ah well.

In FrontPage 2000 you "Publish" the web to the local harddrive instead of a
URL.

Very true.  However, as much as I tend to veer away from MS's
proprietariness (if that word exists), for now I'd rather stick
with what works (IE) than fight the world.  Just ran into too
many sites with probs using Opera or Mozilla within just a few
days.

Cheers,
