It really irritates me that I was trained as a fixer of electronic things,
specifically radios but alas this a rare event now. Someone comes
to me with a VCR, TAM etc and its usually some hideous custom
ASIC or totally unobtainable micro that has failed.
So I migrate to development.. and guess what... there are all these
lovely I.Cs that do exactly what you want.. but you have to buy
7,000,000 of them to even get a look in OR you see a useful
microcontroller .. and you need an ICE, programmer etc that either
costs and arm, a leg and a kidney to buy OR the development gear
is ONLY several hundred dollars but you have to wait for 8 months
for the micros you want.
THEN some delightful character comes onto your list and tells you
that the micro you pour your money, blood ,sweat and tears into is a
pile of pooh and if you are clever .. like him.. you will cast aside
those old dev tools for the new dev tools associated with his
wonderful micro that is so good .... and so the cycle begins again...
Time to throw it all in to grow organic vegetables and live off the
state. Were did all the Hippys go?

Now see what you started, Mr Jinx!
You guys don't much understand america. Over here, none of us accept
this low-end of the food-chain idea. We are "all" potential
millionares. In recent survey of students in america, >70% expected
to be rich by age 40. Because there is so much "expectation", no one
wants to cook the golden gooses - cause one day we all plan to be
gooses ourselves. Got it?

Man... you havent seen the "Far North" of N.Z. (above Auckland)
And Nothing does get done!, huge problem with Kids stoned at
school, their parents give it to them. The Police dont even bother to
attempt to control the growing any longer, just the stoned Kids,
violence etc that is integral to such a life-style. A depressing
substitute for a community. Wide spread un-employment dosen't
help.
The real laugh here is a Coalition runs this country, one of its
members is the Green Party that pushes legalizing Wacky Backy
but is vermently opposed to smoking Tobacco.. HHmmmmmm

A significant portion of North Auckland's and East Coast's economy is
weed and benefits based. In a country the size of UK or Japan but
only a fraction of the population, a suitable climate and plenty of bush
cover, remote towns with no industry, "laid-back" lifestylers aren't hard
to find. Unfortunately. A break from life is nice, but I couldn't be on one
all the time, would drive me round the bend

I know this isn't a popular view there - but California isn't a country
(yet) :-> so in terms of national per capita consumption I think it's
entirely possible for NZ to top the league of space cadets; always accepting
that it's the kind of thing that is, almost by definition, impossible to
measure properly in the first place.
I daresay California beats most places on sheer quantity though.
Anyway - the BBC wouldn't lie to me. They're all fine upstanding chaps in
tailcoats and wing collars, broadcasting none but the purest of truths.

Interesting tidbit. Here in the american west, there are large [???]
bands of hippies that live year round in the national forests.
Loosely called the Rainbow Family. Migrate like snowbirds with
the seasons. 100s of them used to summer in Boulder, and panhandle
on the mall, but the sheriff closed down all the free campgrounds
in Boulder county a couple of years ago, so they aren't as
numerous as before. They are apparently the children of the
flower children of the 60s.

Well, you take an amphibian and a labrador that's not fussy,
champagne on ice, lights down, logs on the fire, a Barry White

mailmen and flies. They'll fetch slippers but who wants gooey
slippers ?
Easier to make than a hippopotamouse or chimpala BTW

No man, you are missing the marketing potential here. Imagine an animal
the will fetch your slippers just by using his tongue.
Or scare off would be intruders by confusing them with a loud
"WHOOBBIT!"
Problem is, a high fence would be no problem for this tadpy.
Or...
OK,OK, enough. How do I get this ICD thing working again?

Now, now, the commies DO hold elections. It's just that there's only one name
on the ballot, and no room for a write-in. Just like the Bradley groupies
experienced at the hands of the Gorons at the DNC. I'm no fan of Bill Bradley
or Algore, but that was just too much. How can they even offer a pretense of
democratic action when they pull stunts like that?!

British Royalty once visited Brisbane many moons ago and were slowly
motoring along in a parade in thier honor.
I didn't know this and came screaming out of a side street on an old
1942 Harley Davidson which blew smoke, leaked oil, and gave the best and
loudest POP BOOMs from the exhaust whenever you changed gears.
I don't know who was surprised the most, them or me, but the cheers from
the crowd were great for the (very) brief chance I got to lead the way.

Tsk, tsk.
The BBC aren't *owned* by the government (well, not completely), they are
merely run by one of Blair's minions.
A subtle distinction, I know...
