Hi All,

My Internet Explorer favorite folder, as well as the Link Bar always get a
new entry called "Netzany". I don't know where it came from, even after I
deleted it, it reappeared after a while. I checked through the website
http://www.netzany.com, it is sort of search engine but with no details at all of
who is hosting it, I'm now forced to use a service I don't want and the
worst is, I worry that this annoying "Netzany" invader may be spying my web
usage. Did anybody get the same problem and how did you remove it?

John

Search your registry for netzany with regedit.  Nuke anything you find.
This may work, or of course may damage things irreparably, depending on
teh phase of the moon and what species of dead fish you're waving over the
monitor at the time.

I would go checking in the "Start" folder, or the various "Run" entries for
a web address to it, which may get accessed and then install itself.
Goodness knows how one gets it in the first place, but it sounds horribly
like a virus type operation.

Um, this sounds just like LOP... what happens is that you may have clicked
on a button saying yes, without scrolling down the page to a hidden
paragraph where you agree to host this infestation of adware. You may have
thought you were agreeing to be transferred to another page...but...AHA...

Not that this has EVER happened to me, requiring hours of careful excision.
Uh-uh. Noppe, no way.

Try control panel programs uninstall and ad-aware from Lavasoft before
getting into the registry. http://www.lavasoft.nu/

It doesn't get everything. Download managers seem to be prime carriers of
this kind of junk- practically virii in themselves. Avoid most of
them- fastdownload is one- it installs an executable "openme.exe" and adds a
line to the shell command in your .ini file.  8-(
I just cleaned a colleagues computer of hundreds of bits of this stuff,
took several hours of work.

Its another wonderful spy ware program. If I'm thinking of the right one
you almost have to use adaware to get rid of this one, it comes disguised as
a file sharing program. Adware can get rid of it no problem. If you try to
do it on your own it can corrupt your Winsock set-up and you'll wind up
reinstalling parts of windoze. Or if you miss a little portion of it it will
download and reinstall itself without you knowing.

I've used adaware for a couple of years, its free and it works. I'd think
there are others out there as well. I worked on one machine where it was
running so slow my old 486 I used to have was faster. Mind you 27 virus and
387 spyware apps all running in the background and competing for system
resources may have had a wee slight bit to do with it.

Ad-aware will cleanse the machine of it..

It is supposed to help with filling out passwords, forms and so on
(including CC numbers, I suppose).

It is "Ad ware" - it pops up ads, supposedly related to sites you visit.

After my 6yr old was using the computer I found a dialer for a 900-number
porn site in Eastern Europe installed on the desktop(!) One call would
have been about US$50.

That sounds like a rather precocious 6 year old that you have there.
