Wondering if anyone here has ordered from Newark Electronics
before and care to comment on their dealings/shipping charges.

PIC Dude,

I'm in Houston and have ordered from them for work related purchases.
The shipping was minimal because they shipped the orders from the Houston
office.  But everything we ordered was in stock, and we usually had the
order delivered either later that day (if we got it in early enough in the
morning), or else the next day.   We had no problems with them.   The only
thing I can say that even potentially would be a negative against them is
that on some items, they are priced higher than other places.  But by the
time we worked up the order, sent it off, and paid shipping to get it to
us, we wouldn't have saved much, if anything, so it was easier and just as
economical to get it from them in the first place.

                                                   Regards,

                                                     Jim

For decades. They are a large, established suplier. Good service, OK prices
& inventory.
Just specify the shiping method you want to control cost and schedule.
Oh, yes...their web-site order system, IMHO stinks. They are the rare
supplier that I prefer to use the phone for.

Here's why I ask...

Ordered 2 semiconductors ($25 total).  They shipped out of SC,
and I am in Austin, TX.  Since I didn't see shipping charges on
the website, I called and was told that UPS ~= $4-$5 (actual
after weighed).  Plus insurance.  But UPS automatically insures
to $100 at no add'l cost, so they said I won't get charged
insurance then.  That's all the charges I was told.

Just got the order and was charged 11% sales tax (max in SC
is 7%, Austin = 8.25%).  I was charged 2.37 for insurance.

Anyone run into this?  This is fraudulent if they don't disclose
first.  If they do have a presence in TX, they should state up front
that I would need to pay tax.  Yes, it's a few $, but I should
not be charged anything which was not disclosed up front and
I will need to place regular small orders, so these will add up.
And they shipped it 4 days later, so it's not like I got it very
fast.

I would have to agree on the online side of it - I use the print catalogue mainly and then enter the part numbers into the online site ... in the last few days I ordered parts of a switch/indicator assembly - all showed as being in stock but one part wasn't, going to have to use duct tape to hold the indicator light for about a month and a half while I wait for the mounting part.
I usually use digi-key except for when they don't stock an item.

We use them a lot at work, but I try not to use them for my own stuff.
My biggest problem with them is with shipping charges.  They have a bad
habit if you order more than one item of shipping you three different
parts of your order in three different shipments from three different
warehouses.  That gets pretty expensive when you need next day shipping.

Personally I absolutely love dealing with Digi-Key.  They always have
everything I need in stock, they have the best online ordering system I
have ever used, I can order at 9:00 PM Eastern time and still have my
order ship that day, and they automatically email me tracking
information on my order.  I get better pricing from FAI, but no where
near the service.
