Yeah - I agree :-) It's expanded slightly in the heading - "All Your Base Are Belong To Us" It's rather a cult thing (or was - it's rather run its course) which took a set of graphics and text from the introduction to a 1980's video game (Zero Wing) (This is the discussion between the Alien "Cats" and the Captain and his crew who have been attacked and have, the Alien presumes, no chance to survive) and turned them into, ultimately, a brilliant (IMHO) shockwave video clip. The whole hinges around the appearance of the phrase "All Your Base ..." or to a lesser extent other extracts from the original in a vast number of unlikely everyday situations. Somewhat like a modern version of "Killroy was here". Which many may also never have heard of? AYB has featured in newspapers, magazines, TV and more. Even included as an easter-egg in one of ID software's games. And more. But probably utterly puzzling to anyone who hasn't been bitten by the bug. The video clip AYB3.SWF is probably the most direct introduction. For what (little :-) ) it's worth, the text goes something like this - (Multiple characters) Captain: What happen? Someone set up us the bomb! We get signal! What? Main screen turn on It's you! Cats: How are you gentlemen? All your base are belong to us !!! You are on the way to destruction! What you say? You have no chance to survive - make your time Ha ha ha. There's alittle more but this is the main part. As you can see - you need to have been bitten by the bug before this starts to appear at all humorous. I was offended when I heard the physicist Stephen Hawking (Stephen Hawking (Cambridge Lectures) - 01 Of 08.mp3) apologize (joke) that his speech synthesizer (he is paralyzed and can no longer speak) couldn't reproduce 'proper' English! Dreadfully sorry no Brit could design a synthesizer up to the task, Sir Professor Hawking 8^) All your engineers flee to America, where they don't have to support socialists and royal parasite fossils? The world's best rock stars have! Anyway, sometimes people don't realize how hurtful some humor is until they get a dose of it. Depends on how victimized you've been - getting salt rubbed on you only hurts when your skin has been flayed off. For instance, I read about some sports team that decided to name itself 'The Fighting Whities' and use a white yuppie businessman in suit and tie as a mascot. This was intended to offend and give WASPS a dose of their own medicine, because often white Americans have used racial stereotypes to name sport teams. It backfired; many white males thought it was quite funny rather than offensive, taking the identity projection of competitive martial, warrior virtues as a compliment, and ordered lots of their T-shirts, to the chagrin of the instigators. What is truly offensive is not an embarrassing lack of verbal etiquette; its that American corporations abuse their workers like toilet paper, degrading their enthusiasm, ambition and moral, then import foreigners (that don't know what 'normal' is - to resent and oppose corporate degradation and exploitation rather than passively accept it) to exploit. Conservatives / Republicans constantly bash immigrants - they want immigrants to live in fear of being deported, rather than wanting business to fear breaking the laws by hiring them; bribed politicians make laws to be broken and terrify indentured immigrant slaves. Pink Fascism sucks. Hi Scott, I agree with a lot of the rest of what you have to say, but I disagree about this humor. There is no racial slur in making fun of a poor translation. I don't think that people from Asia (or more specifically, the Orient) have any disproportionate difficulty in learning correct English, once you take into account that it is from a totally separate language group (i.e., it is probably a lot easier for a Japanese person to learn Korean than to learn English, it would probably be analogous to our learning Spanish). So, if I make fun of this, I'm not making fun of the people for who they are ethnically or racially, just for their inability to translate properly (or, more importantly, their unwillingness to hire someone who could translate properly. Don't be offended. We think it's just as funny when we mess up in other languages. I remember a woman who spoke decent spanish was speaking to a spanish church group at the request of the bishop. With the bishop sitting on the stand behind her she said, "I'm so embarrassed, and it's all his fault." gesturing towards the bishop. She didn't get the response she expected, though, and realized that she used the wrong word for embarrassed. "Embarazado" means 'pregnant'. He insults and offends several people in a shop, and gets arrested.
