I've fried my 16LF877. (Accidentally, +12v to Vdd, negative to Vss)
These are the remains of the autopsy, enjoy.
Regards,
Dennis.
PS: What is that kind of 'antenna' connected to the substrate? (the
unconnected line in the middle)

would you have a *much* bigger version ???
this is pretty small and virtually unuseable

Well nearly. I can see the directory sometimes, but it seems to keep timing
out when trying to connect.

I know that non-windowed, non-flash parts are the same as windowed
parts, and could be erased if there was a way to get UV light into
them. I have wondered if non-windowed parts could be erased with
x-rays.

Dennis:
I don't think it serves any electrical function; I think it's just
there to help support the die and improve mechanical reliability.

My guess is that they are connections for manufacture & test.

I have seen this discussed a lot, and the conclusion seemd to be that x-rays strong enough to cause
erasure would also cause damage.

Agreed. My further guess would be it connects to the "scan chain" structure
added to most digital designs. TTYL

More to the point, it's the *only* support for the die until the plastic
package has been molded around the lead frame following the wire bonding.
I have to say, I'm a bit surprised that a "Principal Design Engineer" at
a major chip manufacturer didn't have a definitive answer for this!

Probably outside his engineering scope and he couldn't justify using
others in the organisation to derive an (unpaid) answer. ;-) I get
this all the time.

Yeah, it's pretty sad. It's a good thing that the talented
Packaging Engineers in our company don't do any microcontroller
architecture; they'd probably be almost as bad at recognizing
the obvious in my field as I am in theirs.
