That procedure worked!!!! I can now get back into my regular account.
I left my orginal account in place, deleted some test accounts that I
had created, and turned off the Welcome screen for logon. I can now
get logged into my regular account with no problem

The 'classic' login prompts for a password but, since there isn't one
set, I just hit 'Enter' and away it goes. :=)

Thanks to all who helped on this issue. I'll be following up on those
other suggestions to try to determine what the original problem was.
For now, I'm in good shape. (That sure beat doing a complete
re-install of XP.)

Thanks all, Bob
