Hello,

I have had one, from 1986 to 1995. Believe or not, the battery was not
replaced for those 9 years. It was a nice construction, easy to repair
"on the kitchen table". 600 ccm, 26HP, and the fuel tank placed under the
hood, not far from the engine. Weight 600kg only due to plastic housing.

Regards,
Imre

Hi,

http://www.trabant.lap.hu/

I still have one 601 -71. You don't see many of them here in Sweden.

Guess by the year of manufacture that your car had a 12V battery. I have 6V-system with dynamo, and I have to replace the battery every second year...  :-(

Hi,

you're right. My one was even installed with a contactless ignition system
- a real blessing! Furthermore, I got also a fuel consumption monitor,
with LEDs and even with a photoresistor to tune the LEDs brightness to the
environment. Another interesting point: the switching between
inside/outside-city-light ("országúti fény"; I do not know the technical
term exactly) was made by a bistable relay.

Regards,
Imre

Hi,

A few years ago, in a summer night, when I was driving the Trabi, I felt smoke, the characteristic smell of burning plastic, coming from that bistable relay. So, for the rest of the night, I could only use "abblendlicht"... 6 Volts=lots of amps + bad contact = smell

Nowadays they do some cheat with electronic hold circuits, to provide a false bistable relay... At least that old relay was genuine, no fake....    :-)

Hi,

more older Trabis (and another vehicles) was installed with a foot-switch
to turn Abblendlicht on/off. They were heavy duty ones so they were
capable to switch 10A with no voltage drops. However, they were huge ones.

Hi,

By the way, maybe I should install a Pic or AVR in the dynamo regulator, and extend battery life .....  :-)
