Check out http://www.phidgets.com, particularly the
PhidgetInterfaceKits. Yes, I did some contract stuff
for them so I'm a bit biased, but the
PhidgetInterfaceKit (8/8/8) sounds like it'd work for
you. It's a general purpose I/O board that connects to
USB (8 analog inputs, 8 digital inputs, 8 digital
outputs). It's out of Calgary - at least you can avoid
duty. ;)

Measurement computing has the PMD1208LS, which I'm using for my battery
project. http://www.dvanhorn.org/NIMH/Index.php
16 I/Os, plus 8 analog ins, 2 analog outs, and a 32 bit counter.
There's a link on my page, to the MCC site, about the PMD box.

Memory effect is real, and exists in NIMH! (Nicad not tested yet)
