Does National charge everyone shipping fees now? I went there today and they said they are "due to the large number of requests from @nnytech.net, we are now requiring customers from @nnytech.net to pay a small shipping fee" this was interesting considering I'm the only one who sends out mail from nnytech.net and I hadn't requested any samples in the past year or two. They wanted $8 to send me 4 LM3524s, when they were a $.50 part to begin with. I'm putting together an order at Jameco. I haven't ordered any samples from them in the past year. I recall that they were being selective on charging shipping. Although I had a yahoo email account in the profile, they didn't charged me shipping. I've tried numerous addresses, varying from my own domains, to ISP accounts, to free email accounts, every one I've tried requires shipping. I no longer use any national parts, I figure if their competitors all have free samples, why shouldn't they. Funny, since they used to be #1 for free samples, no longer. The LM3524 is an improved version, the opamp inputs common-mode range is extended and allows connecting to the output voltage and vref directly, not having to use a voltage divider like the SG3524. Just to test, I ordered some lm386 samples from national yesterday and looks like the order is confirmed. First they sent me an email that the order is received and will be confirmed in 24hrs. Later (today morning) I got the confirmation the the parts will ship from Singapore warehouse. No mention of shipping charges!! I've used a few National parts, mostly high-current opamps, but I've started using Maxim and Texas Instruments analog ICs a lot more than I do National's equivalents. As far as logic ICs go, I tend to use more Fairchild 74xx and 40xx logic chips - they're cheaper than ONsemi and TI's offerings, but they work just as well. Last time I checked, Fairchild still used the WW-YY date coding on their parts - %DEITY knows how TI encode the datecodes on their parts - "46WX9P". Um, what? Just received a TI samples order this morning - they seem to have moved over to biodegradable (i.e. paper and cardboard) packaging (they call it "Geami") as opposed to bubblewrap and plastic. Tissue paper and what appears to be a sheet of brown paper that's been run through a Christmas decoration making machine. Did your samples come via Digikey? I know they've switched to the new stuff, and they also handle some sample fulfilment for TI. Roughly from south of San Francisco down to & including San Jose; mostly on west & south sides of the bay; may include cities on the east side of the bay. Other areas of semiconductor activity are in southern California, in Orange County (southeast of Los Angeles) and San Diego.
