'[OT:] National semi samples'
2004\07\15@232624
by
Martin Klingensmith
Does National charge everyone shipping fees now? I went there today and
they said they are "due to the large number of requests from
@nnytech.net, we are now requiring customers from @nnytech.net to pay a
small shipping fee" this was interesting considering I'm the only one
who sends out mail from nnytech.net and I hadn't requested any samples
in the past year or two.
They wanted $8 to send me 4 LM3524s, when they were a $.50 part to begin
with. I'm putting together an order at Jameco.
I'm not really mad, I know they pay a lot of money in shipping, I'm just
wondering if they randomly picked me.

I haven't ordered any samples from them in the past year. I recall
that they were being selective on charging shipping. Although I had a
yahoo email account in the profile, they didn't charged me shipping.

I've tried numerous addresses, varying from my own domains, to ISP
accounts, to free email accounts, every one I've tried requires
shipping.
I no longer use any national parts, I figure if their competitors all
have free samples, why shouldn't they. Funny, since they used to be #1
for free samples, no longer.

I think Jameco only carries the SG3524. The LM3524 is an improved
version, the opamp inputs common-mode range is extended and allows
connecting to the output voltage and vref directly, not having to use a
voltage divider like the SG3524.
Cheerful regards,
Bob

I'm not surprised at this - personally I only ever request samples if I can't get parts from a
normal distributor. $8 probably still doesn't cover their admin etc. Anyone who is a genuine developer needing parts won't have a problem with a few dollars' cost - this
will be a negligible part of the development cost of a product.

Hi Bob,
so if I hook up a voltage divider to match the internal reference I
should be ok, right?
I ordered 12 so I hope so :)

Yes, divide the reference and the feedback and it should work fine.
I know I have a box of those Arnold cores somewhere, if I find them I'll
ask you for your address and send you a couple.

Just to test, I ordered some lm386 samples from national yesterday and
looks like the order is confirmed. First they sent me an email that
the order is received and will be confirmed in 24hrs. Later (today
morning) I got the confirmation the the parts will ship from Singapore
warehouse. No mention of shipping charges!!

Yeah, same here. I've used a few National parts, mostly high-current opamps,
but I've started using Maxim and Texas Instruments analog ICs a lot more than
I do National's equivalents. As far as logic ICs go, I tend to use more
Fairchild 74xx and 40xx logic chips - they're cheaper than ONsemi and TI's
offerings, but they work just as well. Last time I checked, Fairchild still
used the WW-YY date coding on their parts - %DEITY knows how TI encode the
datecodes on their parts - "46WX9P". Um, what?
Just received a TI samples order this morning - they seem to have moved over
to biodegradable (i.e. paper and cardboard) packaging (they call it "Geami")
as opposed to bubblewrap and plastic. Tissue paper and what appears to be a
sheet of brown paper that's been run through a Christmas decoration making
machine. It's strange-looking stuff, but at least the ICs seem to be intact
:)
Later.

Did your samples come via Digikey? I know they've switched to the new
stuff, and they also handle some sample fulfilment for TI.

Orders to TI for development kits, and thus probably samples, are actually
fulfilled by Digikey, who moved over to that kind of packaging fairly
recently.

Nope - they came direct from TI. There was a TI invoice in the box and the
UPS shipping label listed the source as "Samples Program, Texas Instruments,
Thief River Falls, MN".

Not only that, look at the format of the invoice vs. DigiKey's format
-- they are exactly the same except for the TI logo block vs. the
DigiKey logo block...
Oh.. and I used to live in MN and believe me, there's not much in Thief
River Falls EXCEPT DigiKey. ;-)

I've never ordered anything from DigiKey, so I've never seen one of their
invoices. If they've reduced their shipping charges recently, I might give
them a try.

Heh.
Just rechecked the invoice (if you can call it that, the "Total Amount Due"
is $0.00) - the address at the top is 701 Brooks Ave. South, PO Box 677,
Thief River Falls, MN 56701-0677 USA. In the "Sold To" is: "Texas Instruments
Sample Program, 12500 TI Boulevard, PO Box 660199 MS 8677, Dallas TX
75266-0000". Hmm. Thought it was strange that a company that went by the name
"Texas Instruments" didn't seem to be based in Texas... Heh.
Must be plenty of semiconductor companies based in Texas - seems the ones
that aren't based in some part of California (about 75% seem to be in
Sunnyvale) are based in Texas. Not that it matters, just an idle observation.
'Scuse my lack of knowledge of US geography and culture, but which part of
the USA got nicknamed "Silicon Valley", anyway? IIRC it was some part of CA,
but I'm not sure which. Again, not that it matters, just more fluff :)

Silicon valley is in northern California. Roughly from south of
San Francisco down to & including San Jose; mostly on west & south
sides of the bay; may include cities on the east side of the bay.
Other areas of semiconductor activity are in southern California,
in Orange County (southeast of Los Angeles) and San Diego.
