$118/lb -- isn't it actually around $10,000/lb ?
--hey that's only two! orders of magnitude, and it's not as if they are
confusing pounds with kilos or anything
But seriously, costs aside, the shuttle is magnificent. And if we had
different
politicians, we'd have better estimates.
And what's more. The system of capitalism produces such bounty that this
occurs and no one even notices it very much. This is the real wonder to me.
Imagine what waste we could have if the world embraced capitalism!
When examining politicians, and soldiers, my baseline is Washington himself.
And if you read about nixon, you must also read about Washington, or
re-read,
to cleanse not only the mind but the soul. -- To remember how things can
be,
and ought to be --
I just think it's interesting to compare the culture, attitudes, and
successes
of NASA during the Apollo program and the early years of space flight with
the last few years (since Challenger, at least).
"That guy should be at NASA" has gone from an expression of genius to an
expression of...I don't know what, but certainly less quality. The kind of
guy
that could mix up pounds and kilos or feet and meters and crash a probe into
Mars.
