The best thread I saw commenting about this was in Slashdot:

Q: What's for supper?
A: Pea soup!

Q: This beer tastes like warm piss.
A: That's not beer, that's ...

Q: This food tastes like shit.
A: Sorry, we ran out of piss.

Q: Why are you so pissy lately?
A: You are what you eat, so ...

Q: Get over here. We need you to help make supper.
A: Sorry, I "gave" at the office.

Q: Who pissed in your cornflakes this morning?
A: Everyone.

Foreign Soldier 1: Sorry, I can't come to the party tonight, I've got a
case of diarrhea.
Foreign Soldier 2: A whole case? Bring it over. Trust me, these guys will
drink anything. You won't believe what I saw them eat for supper.

"Hey soldier, we need some fresh coffee. You mind filling 'er up?
... Thanks
Hey, the Colonel wants some cream. Here's a Penthouse. Do your duty, son...

Urine is only useful as last recourse as urea isn't filtered and will poison
long term. Swamp water is preferred. The weight saving shown is per person
PER DAY!!! It's simply a standard FORWARD osmosis membrane. Osmotic
potential is obtained by food concentration. Must have some moisture content
to get going well I imagine. You may be able to use Goretex - maybe even too
fine!.

Place food in foot of Goretex(tm) bivvy bag. Prepare food by sleeping in
puddle, swamp, stream etc. On waking, scrape out food, heat and serve.
Scrape and then wash bivvy bag interior with small amount of CLEAN water.
Repeat as required :-)

Sleeping in a puddle is standard camping practice from my experience...

I just bought a (second hand) Goretex Bivvy bag :-)

I can't wait to try it out. Puddles here we come.
Previous owner had only used it in snow caves in Chile.

what's really sad is that by adding a small hand pump a good reverse
osmosis membrane could be used, in which case urine would be totally
acceptable (water on the shuttle and the space station is recycled in
this way, along with other minor treatment i'm sure).  with a proper
system, i'd have no problem with that.  note that the system they are
suggesting would also not filter out many other toxins that might be
present, from chemical warfare residue to pesticides and viruses, and
that 99.9% is not high enough for crypto-sporidia and similar cyst
(typically 99.99% rejection is considered the minimum, 4 organisms per
litre will cause problems in humans).

seriously, there is a proper reverse osmosis system for emergencies on
some life boats that uses a hand pump and i believe a ceramic filter
(which can also have silver added to kill live bacteria) that has been
successfully used for months by one couple that got lost several years
ago.  this system lets you use sea water and remove the salt and many,
many bacteria in sea water.  and it doesn't have to be ceramic!

i worked for a water purification company for a while and learned most
of the tricks, it really wouldn't be that hard to do it right.  also, i
suspect even slightly muddy water would slow the process down to where
it could take hours to get "enough" water into the food.  it's a silly
idea except for small groups behind enemy lines, even a small unit
should be able to carry a good water purifier, which you should be able
to make light enough to carry when empty and use just before meals, even
with urine etc.  actually, using urine, if properly processed, would be
brilliant.

the human body produces about a litre more water per day than it takes
in from metabolizing food (the hydrogen in carbohydrates etc. gets
oxidized into water).  of course a lot of the water is lost through
sweat and respiration, so i guess a "still suit" like in dune would be
in order (in which case you could us the soldiers body weight to operate
pumps in their boots as they hiked).  i don't know why someone was silly
enough to develop the rather poor system mentioned in the article.
given it's poor performance poisoning the soil as you retreated would be
very easy for an opposing army, and they could easily make everyone very
sick, they could even use something that's normally present at lower
levels or something like urea which would make it very hard to prove
chemical warfare.  not at all clever.  a small investment in de-ionizing
resins would likely solve the urea and some other problems, and for the
small quantities of water involved it would only take a few grams, and
the stuff is cheap in bulk.

overall, i'd say what they've come up with is very amateurish, i hate to
think how much we tax payers spent on that pathetic system and the
alleged "research".

<http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article3267.htm>  proof that
the U.S. media is now state controlled!  Ask your' local tv station why
the hell they aren't airing the news any more!  Our system of government
requires an informed public, with their eyes open.
