Hi there,

I have just opened my casing and found leaking caps on my mobo. So
it is time
for me to look for quality capacitors like Nichicon or Nippon for my
mobo. Do you know
where I can get quality caps in *Malaysia* or nearby countries? FYI, my
mobo is from MSI.
The chipset is 815 PT........ I blame the caps!

BIG THANKS,
John Chung

Can't help you with Malaysian sources (there must be some hobby shops
in KL? ) but this is no doubt a result of the infamous counterfeit
electrolyte scandal.. the formula for electrolytic cap electrolyte was
stolen and copied, but the formula didn't include some vital additives-
ones that in low-Z caps stabilize them. You can get replacements from
Digikey in the US.

Actually, I'm just about to order 10 pieces for a Soyo motherboard
that blew up (2 of them burst- "Wendell" brand) 1000uF/6.3V. If you
want to send me some $ to cover the cost I'll order some extras and
throw them in the mail to you.

I had a similar problem, 5 burst caps on an MSI motherboard also. This time
2700uF, 6.3v types. I ordered replacements at $4 (AUD) apiece from farnell
and the PC has been rock solid stable ever since.

Interesting, when my ABIT KT7A-RAID blew up (13 JPCON 2200uF 6.3V leaking
caps) I found two of the power diodes (presumably in the proccessor core
voltage regulator circuit) to be soldered incorrectly and not making
contact with the pads. I just assumed that caused the caps to burst. Maybe
they weren't related?

I just replaced the whole MB, I keep it on a shelf to remind me that paying
more doesn't neccesarily mean you get better product.

Some motherboard diodes get hot enough to de-solder themselves if the
case isn't properly cooled.  Happened to me a few times with a
particular motherboard design.
