'[EE] Warning About Pericom'
2006\06\19@195512 by Bob Axtell

face picon face
This is a heads-up warning about Pericom.

These guys make some spiffy analog switches used for bus mux-demux,
and a few jelly-bean items.

I called them to verify an active status, and they said yes. I asked for
samples,
they said yes. Looks like a decent vendor, right? So I laid out the PCB.

I didn't get any samples. When I tried a purchase, they were available but I
had to purchase a full reel (about 4500 devices).  Now I have to redesign
the PCB to a more reasonable vendor

Dealing with them is very slippery. Just a warning.

So you forgot to ask 'what's the minimum purchase' then?  Thinking about
it, you should have asked 'by the way, have you any in stock' as well.
Been there, done that!

"Thou shalt not design thy PCB before thou hast the components in thine hands."

Sorry but it just had to be said... Thanks for the warning though.

Been there, done that, too :)

Never trust a sample unless it's been received, is in the circuit and works
the way I need it to work :)

Never trust a promise of sales unless there's /some/ track record -- like
e.g. an manufacturer sales site with online stock info that I can monitor
for a few months, or a trustworthy distributor with stock who tells me that
this is generally in stock.

BTW, it seems that due to RoHS changes stock even for normally well
available manufacturers can be missing. This will probably still be going
on for a while.

And even if you DO have the parts in hand, make certain that
you can order them in the quantities you need later.
 e.g. Maxim or Motorola (68HC11s)

And there are some companies that are good at sending samples, but when
you go to buy the parts....

Exception 1 - Maxim "Thou shalt not consider designing the part in until
thou hast production quantity in thine hand ..."

Thou shalt not design thy PCB until:

Atmel

" ... until thou hast lifetime production quantity in hand,
UNLESS thou art prepared to "slightly modify" code occasionally as new
'improved' processors are introduced and old ones are 'retired'."

Zilog

       " ."

       You have been warned :-(

Microchip:

Olin has done at least one project with the chip(s), Microchip has
acknowledged the problems he found, documented them in the errata sheet,
you have read that sheet, and you realy understand what is stated there.

or

1.    New Silicon has been produced which does not exhibit the problem
(see above for new problems).

2.     All voltages in your design lie Vss =< V =< Vdd

3.    Errata sheet does not mention fish or Moon phases.

Intersil

Is that the old Intersil or the new one?

Motorola        Who?
HP                   Who?
Siemens           Who?
Wang                Who?
Data General    Who?
IBM                   Who?
Compa ...
