Is anyone aware of a surface mount photo transistor (or other optical
sensor) that is available on tape packaged face down ?
We currently use 0805 LEDs supplied in that manner but I haven't found
a sensor. Volumes are too high for hand placement but not high enough
to influence a semi supplier.

Steve.

Ummm... could you use an LED?

I assume what you are looking for is a sensor that looks 'through the PCB' :
Vishay TEMD1000
http://www.vishay.com/docs/81564/81564.pdf
They also do emitters - TSML1000

A LED will ususally operate as an (somewhat insensitive) sensor if pushed.

Why not just mount the transistor on the bottom of the board?

Alternatively, and probably not usable by automated assemblers,
(unless they can drop a part and push?)
punch/route a rectangular hole in the board and have the part
hang by it's leads into the hole.

Good idea. Although LED's have much poorer sensitivity,
they are photoelectric. It seems they have best gain when
seeing their own color of light (at least for the half
dozen types I played with).

Not sure if this got through last time I posted it...

Vishay gull-wing parts available in normal and reverse orientation and taping.
Try http://www.ebv.com for pricing

TEMT 1000 (phototransistor)
http://www.vishay.com/docs/81554/81554.pdf

TEMD 1000 (photodiode)
http://www.vishay.com/docs/81564/81564.pdf

TSML1000 (IR LED)
http://www.vishay.com/docs/81033/81033.pdf

I know Agilent do something similar to the LED,
but quite a lot more expensive - they may also do detectors in the same package.
