I found a nice RF SoC from TI designed for 2.4GHz wireless audio
streaming. Looks good for my wireless guitar link. Not sure if it'll
be worth using though.

CC8520 RF SoC http://www.ti.com/product/cc8520 up to 5000 kbps over the air

CC2591 front end http://www.ti.com/product/cc2591

Anyone have any experience using these? Any advice? Alternative products? Notes

Why don't you just go ahead and buy a PurePath kit from TIStore?
It is stereo CD quality and you can also use for some things else like a
wireless headphone for video games.
It come ready to be used with the cables, battery, USB programmer in case
you want change some parameters, Master transceiver and Slave transceiver.
I have two Kits that I use on my PS3 where I can also use the microphone
feature too.
Believe me, it will be much cheaper and you also don't have to worry about
RF layout wich is a pain in *** if you don't have the necessary equipment.

I'm trying to AVOID paying hundreds of dollars

Let him learn the hard way about RF design work.  There's a reasonable chance what he makes will work for short range (line of sight in a good-sized room), it doesn't have to pass FCC, and you don't care if other RF devices in the same general frequency band are rendered unusable.  This makes is far easier to 'succeed' even if what is created is not a practical or legal product.  With a RF power amp you don't even need an antenna to get a few feet of range, the zigbee modules I've designed (cc2591 RF poweramp was used) get a few feet sans antenna.  I didn't do the RF part of the design for a reason.

I agree $149 is a no-brainer, but VG wants to prove he can do it for cheaper himself.  At the least he'll have some more EE experience at the end.

VG: when TI says the design should be copied as accurately as possible, believe it.  If it is a 4-layer design and you want to do it in 2, figure half the range at best and a good chance of unusably poor performance.

Good luck to you!
J

I bought my kits under promotional price, TI always charge low price during
the release of any new product.
I didn't know that was more than U$100.00 now, I remember that I paid less
than U$50,00.

I suggest you to wait a couple more months and check out on
iteadstudio.comfor Headphones With nRF24Z1.
Will not gonna have the same performance of the Purepath from TI, but will
solve your problem cheaper than TI.

About the RF design... TI designed this device using four layer for a good
reason, 2.4Ghz is not for homemade PCBs, any more or less millimeter on the
trace will make the device fail.

But if you really really want try build your own...  go ahead and good
luck, you will need. ;-)

I'm looking forward to hear about your conclusion after your experience.

Or he can buy an Arduino and simply write:

Radio.TransmitMusic(&FromGuitar);

Sorry, I couldn't resist. :D :D :D

I bought this a few years ago. It's really cool. Low speed though, but
entirely sufficient for its purpose

When I bought it, it was $25 and I got free shipping because the lady
on the telephone was very nice and I'm a student. Now THAT's
reasonable pricing a student can afford

Depends, if you then happen to marry the lady, that $25 will turn into
*much* higher costs. :D

Well, maybe well worth it, not questioning this. ;)

My name and address? I don't think that's very useful. I haven't
received any spam or advertising from them at all, so I don't think
they've made any money off of me.

The lady said she had kids of her own in university and could
therefore understand my financial situation. I think she was just
being nice without anything to gain for herself

Your reassurance is appreciated, but not necessary. I find that this
"phase" is highly educational and character building, promoting of
self sufficiency instead of blind consumerism, and fun. Also, it's not
temporary.

Would you care to explain what the "kkkkk"s are? I only speak English,
French, and another language without that my ks in succession

Apologies accepted VG.

For every one, please don't take me wrong. My English for listen or speak
is ok, but as you can see I'm a terrible writer and most of the time I
follow this list as a reader for this reason.
In Portuguese, "kkkk" means some thing funny, not specifically you VG.
Was funny to me the memories of the things I've tried to build, things that
did not had the slightest chance of working.
I agree with you, thanks to this curiosity today I'm able to design
functional circuits.
I'm sorry if I seemed arrogant to you, it was just a misunderstood. The
proof is that I was trying to help you, I do have sense of humor but wasn't
never my intention underestimate you.
Anyway, feel free to ask me to clarify any misunderstanding about my poor
English.

Thanks

Oh, that's good to know! I suppose I could understand why that is the
