I am looking for such a device. I need it small, fast, and I need at
least three.
Output current should be settable, over a reasonable range. I expect
to be using 10-100mA. Input is from a 9 - 12V source.

Anyone seen something like this?
Linear solutions are not acceptable.

I needed something similar not too long ago. Didn't seem to find anything that fit the bill, so I ended up building my own current sink using a PIC (already part of the project), SPI DAC, OpAmp plus some transistors and resistors. Wasn't desgined with 100mA in mind, though. I should have a few pcbs left.

I seem to miss a lot of details. You specify a range, but no accuracy
(short term, long term, absolute, relative, ...). Must is source or
sink, how much voltage is it allowed to drop? And most of all: "linear
solutions are not acceptable" leaves me confused. You want PWM current
switching? Or a uC with a DA and linear 'power' stage? not linear
implies steps. what is the maximum step?

 Do you mean Linear Technology ? :)
If you need a device being able to source or to sink a current with
low noise output and high liniarity, then inevitable will be a linear
one. A power amplifier configured for output current will do it best.
A programable DC voltage could drive the amplifier:
0V to -100mA, +2.5V to 0mA and +5V to +100mA.
Or variations...

The best solution I can think of is to use an LM317 in current mode - total
of 2 components for a fixed current source, the LM317 and a resistor to set
the current.

Take the output from the adj terminal, and select the resistor from the
output to adj terminals for 1.25V drop at the desired current.

To make current settable, use an FET as an adjustable resistor, or use a
range of resistors to set a range of fixed currents, and switch them in and
out as desired using FET switches.

Alan, this will be just sourcing, so will need also a swich for
changing the current direction into the load (for sinking).
As usualy we are planning solutions without full specifications.
David, have mercy and spit the problem entirely... when will be the
satellite launched ?
Will be necessary 10...100mA at -200C in condensed acid atmosphere ?

The 317 is a linear solution. What I'm trying to avoid is blowing away
significant power in a resistor, or other linear device.

PWM is fine, but I don't have much space or time to spend getting there.

:)  Not a sattelite.

No, relatively normal environment.  I'm just trying to save power is all.


The ideal solution would be a two terminal device that will sink a
settable current in that range.  I can feed it 5V or 9-12V as power.

Check the datsheets of standard SMPS chips like the lm2575 for
constant-current mode. Or maybe google for LED drivers. Makeing it
adjustable should not be too difficult.

I know how to build it, I'm trying to avoid that. I have a bunch of fish to fry.
I was hoping someone out there had seen one for sale, or had a few I could buy.

There are a fair number of white LED drivers aimed at cellphones
and the like that might fit your requirements.  Typically several
drivers at "moderate" current for LCD backlight and keypad, plus
perhaps a higher current output for "flash."  Try National and Maxim?

is a zero to 5 amp source but might be adaptable to lower currents
