'[EE] Palm IIIe software development?'

Hello everyone. Just got myself a Palm IIIe for a very low price to play
around with.

Was wondering if anybody had recommendations of software development
tools for the Palm IIIe? Would prefer free, something in C and either
windows or Linux is fine.

Thinking of doing some stuff over the serial and IR ports.

Thanks for any pointers. TTYL

There is a gcc with a Palm target, and some of the earlier Palm programming
books refer to it.  It does seem to work, but I haven't dreamed up that
killer app to write.

Hmmph.  You used to be able to download a gnu-based toolchain for Palm
development without needing to sign up for their "developer program."
I'm not impressed; this seems like a big step in the wrong direction
(OTOH, it wouldn't surprise me if this is the only way they could keep
up with the churn in palmos versions and processors...)

The gnu toolchain still seems to be available at
http://prc-tools.sourceforge.net/

Citi Bank gave those away years ago if you opened up a little account
with them for a few months.  It has been sitting here unopened on the
shelf ever since.

I don't have a killer app for anyone to write but I'd dearly love to
find a little app that would let me put a list of names down one column
and have a number next to each one, every time I tap the number beside
a name it would increment the number by one.  Doesn't need to do
anything more than that, really.

I searched briefly for a simple scripting system that would make it
easy to create something like that in a few minutes and didn't find
anything.  If anyone can point me towards a way to get there I'd be
happy.  I was hoping to avoid experiencing a whole new paradigm just
to be able to do this.

thanks

It's been a while since I've done any Palm development and my memory
is a bit sketchy, but I believe the prc-tools only support the PalmOS
4 API.  I have a vague recollection that if you wanted to use the
PalmOS 5 API, you needed to use the tools from Palm.

But for the Palm III, you won't be wanting to use the new API anyway,
and if you are already familiar with the gnu toolchain, prc-tools is
definitely the way to go.

One of those Ameritrade-type places was giving away a T3 with an account
(not little...)
We loan our old Palms to friends to get them started/hooked on the idea.

Simple?  Yes.
Scripting?  Yes.
Whole New Paradigm?  You Betcha!  ;-)

Heh.  That's how I got mine.  Alas, with the way the market has been
behaving, it wasn't so 'free' after all.  :-(

The previous-generation palms seem to be great deals.  Palm IIIxe's
are readily available for about $30.  Alas, this is probably a sign
that there was entirely too much churn in the palmos product lines
in those days.  The handspring spinoff and re-merge has got to be one
of the sillier things that has happened in the industry in a long time,
and my wife's sony is orphaned as well...

Hopefully, the consolidation will be a good thing.  I don't WANT a
palmtop that acts like a tiny windows system...

Curious....first off, I don't own one of these, never
had the desire to (so whats wrong with lots of sticky
notes all over?)

But...IS it possible to create a custom screen for
these, say like a scorecard, and then transmit via IR
back to a host?  Anyone ever done this before?

Also would require scribble to text conversion for
notes related to the scoring....

No F3 key.  If sticky notes work for you, great.  But I challenge
you to find the one that has that account number for the used
parts warehouse...in Nebraska...that you found on
the Web...four years ago....

...and find it in 30 seconds.  :-)

I don't see anything in that, which wouldn't be possible.

Built into Palm OS.  "Graffiti".
