'[EE] NZ Alternative Energy site'
|NZ supplier of solar thermal and photovoltaic, diesel alternator, wind
and other 'energy converters'.
APPEAR to be Auckland based.
Their solar thermal systems would seem to be competitive with mains
electricity, which is somewhat of a surprise to me.
4 m^2 evacuated tube solar heater for $NZ1100.
You still have to plumb, pump and control it, but even then the price
In Auckland NZ the mean kWh per m^2 per day is about 2.5 in Winter and
about 8 in Summer.
Allowing a low mean of 3 kWh/m^2/day, efficiiency of 50% thermal
recoverable and electricity at $0.12/kWh (conservative and getting
worse) that gives an energy output $ value per year of 4 m^2 x 3
kWh/m^2/day x 365 wioy x 50% x $0.12 ~~= $250/year for the panel
alone. The 50% efficiency figure affects this linearly. Even adding
own labour and other costs that looks like a payback of under 10 years
using a proper DCF analysis which is better than what I'd expect.
Looks interesting. The Contact page does indicate an Auckland address.
I've been wondering how long it would be before someone managed to
import some Chinese evacuated tube solar collectors - it was something
I was thinking of looking into myself.
Prices on inverters and batteries (and solar panels) don't look to be
Thanks for the info.

For those that might not have stumbled across it
seems AFAICT to be the only publication out there
a bit "mother earth news"-ish ( hippie commune flavour ie- folks all
look like jinx, josh or me ;) but practical- not bad.
Russell- If you surf across a review/comparison of shingle/roof
covering style solar units or BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaics
would be most appreciative.

Hah, well, if I'm going to first in a list that doesn't include "Hit" in
the title, I s'pose "Hippy" is as good as any
I had a momentary brush with alternative energy this week. A fellow
PIClister, a shy lurker, almost got involved with a project for the
Waitakere Council, and thereby almost got me involved too. But in
the end they decided to import one of these from Scotland. Hoots !
Pity. There were readies available for local developers ;-((
Initially the council were considering a vertical blade design, something
along these lines (I think)
Those in Auckland may know the site - Olympic Park, opposite the
Gull Service Station in Wolverton St, New Lynn
Um, if that was meant to be a secret, disregard
Their Luxeons are over priced fwiw.

Hmm, I have pointed this list there in the past. There is also the original
Mother Earth News magazine website at http://www.motherearthnews.com/ which
is also a bountiful source of information about living ff the land around
