Something like this is really cool -- bright yet miniacture 7-segment
display. They can make your product look rather high class yet
do not occupy much space (which is always quite tight ...).
http://www.keyence.com/products/sensors/fiberoptic/fsv20/fsv20_features_1.php

Unfortunately so far I have not been able to find commercial
off the shelf parts. I believe companies like Keyence and
others are using COB (chip on board) to achieve this kind
of display. Normally you do not want to do this because
manufacturing can be complicated.

Do you have some ideas of where to get customized
part for this kind of things?

What about these" www.rohm.com/products/databook/dp/pdf/lf-301vama.pdf
8mm high character and available at DigiKey, I have used them several
times, especially because they are SMT.

I believe there are numerous other sellers. All SMT stuff too.

Thanks but this might be still too big (10mm x 6.9mm dimension).
Take note that Keyence sensor is really quite slim (9mm).

Xiaofan, I use calculator-style LED displays, just 1 Australian dollar each

Search for D04 here

http://www.oatleyelectronics.com/

Pictures of mine. They're multiplexed just like any other display

End-on, showing lenses

If '7120' is a date code ......... wow !

Did you find one that is that size, Xiaofan?
It obviously exists. I'd be a bit surprised if it were specifically made
for Keyence.

No. It is indeed a customized part (COB: chip on board).

Hi Xiaofan:

I have some hand held military radios that have a LCD assembly which is
slightly larger than a Nickel coin, see: http://www.prc68.com/I/816173.shtml#LCD
there are 5 7-segment characters about 1/8" high.  It uses COB technology and
has a back light.  I have not found a source for them as spare parts.
http://www.prc68.com/I/816173.shtml#LCD

I've started looking into using a multiplexed glass, which might be lower in
cost than a custom part but that takes many more PIC pins to drive than the 4
wire interface for the above COB unit.

One solution is to use machine placed 0402 SMT LEDs. This has
been successfully used. But you need to have good pick and place
accuracy.
