Good day to all.
I'm looking for a replacement for Notepad text editor in Windows. The replacement editor MUST be aware if the file that is currently open was changed by a different application and prompt to reload if that should occur.
I currently have licenses for UltraEdit and TSE but would prefer find a much simpler editor to replace Notepad. All of my old editors (running under DOS / Windows98 are NOT aware if the currently-open file was modified by an outside application.
I'd prefer to find an editor that will run on all Windows platform from Win98se on up to Win7 if possible. Free is nice but I'm prepared to pay a shareware fee provided I can install the program on all of my (several) computers.
I'm guessing that most of us here on the PIClist have a favorite editor and I'm hoping to tap the accumulated opinions.
Reason for the change: I'm in the habit of leaving text files open in my editors (Qedit, UltraEdit, Notepad) and either changing an open file in MPLAB or on a different computer via Dropbox. This hasn't yet caused any data loss, because I'm careful. But I'd rather be covered by using an editor that is aware if the file was changed externally, then prompts for me to reload the file.
Bonus points if the editor reloads the changed file with the cursor on the same (or approximately same) line that it was on before the file was reloaded.
Any suggestions?
Many thanks!

The answer is: Notepad++ (<http://notepad-plus-plus.org/>)
Free, full of features and fills your requirements.

Notepad++ has been mentioned, but if you also want a more sophisticated set of features, gvim also notifies you if the file has changed and prompts to reload it for you.

Notepad++ has had that feature for a while as well.

Notepad++ too, and it also support Macintosh line endings also, and can
convert files from one format to another.
Besides, it has a wide range of plugins, such as Hexadecimal Editor
(Notepad++ opens any type of file, even binary), File Compare (diff),
Spell Checker and much more.
It also does syntax-highlighting for more than 50 file-types/languages,
including XML, SQL, shell-scripts, C, HTML, COBOL (!!! :) )and also
user-defined.
And all that just scratches the surface. I would really love if it were
written using a cross-platform framework, like wxWidgets.

I think I have been led to my new favorite editor!
For several years after Turbo Pascal 3 I used it strictly as an editor. The simplified Wordstar interface just fit my needs. I have never fully accepted pointing devices.
Borland offerred a word processor that (Sprint) that allowed the user to redefine the user interface to imitate whatever suited them. As I recall, that led to MicroBabble sueing because it was too easy for a user to make it look like Word. Sprint allowed 6 documents open at a time which was awesome in the world of DOS. It also had a nasty glitch that had to be hacked as faster computers came along. SPF was another favorite editor for those of us with IBM Mainframe exposure. I think the ability to manipulate blocks of text without the mouse was the favorite feature.
NP++ looks like it will help me to do things my way again.
The new "new" compilers that seem to take so much time to for me to "learn" are really just a new IDE or interface. I find it like working for a new boss who is a micro-manager.
When you lock in to using a particular IDE, you allow yourself to become dependent on that particular IDE. You lose awareness of how things fit together and cannot easily move to a new environment in a timely manner. When that happens, you are no longer in charge, you have become a slave to the environment!
Thank you, I intend to take the time to learn to properly use PP++!

I use Notepad++ and I have used the Hexadecimal editor BUT it has problems and I won't trust the hex editor any more until I understand it or it is fixed.
Looking for the hex editor plugin after putting NP++ on a machine, I found this forum posting <sourceforge.net/projects/npp-plugins/forums/forum/670932/topic/5218150>
It claims a test file starting with the hex bytes 01 00 82 00 will not open correctly. I tried it and it doesn't. I created the test file using Frhed (which I learned about here) after I realized I don't know how to do it using hexl-mode in emacs.

I use Code::Blocks and wxWidgets some, too.

I would also have mention grim, however, that is definitely not simpler
than UltraEdit.
You may also can take a look at pnotepad or Programmer's Editor:

Also, WinEdt http://www.winedt.com is a mature program that will do
this. $40.00

I've tried most of the editors mentioned like Notepad+, Ultraedit, Programmers notepad, etc. However, I am a fan of the PsPad Editor. See http://www.pspad.com. Lots of features in one free package. Multi language support, Hex editor, difference tool, Column edits plus what you want (external change notification). Major plus points for me are the synchronised moving, inbuilt diff tool. You can choose to make a file read only while in the editor to prevent you accidentally changing it.

A while back I was looking for a programmers text editor (multiple
documents, syntax highlighting, line numbering) and have tried both
"Programmer's Notepad" and "Notepad++". Both have the feature you're asking
for.
If something else modifies the file, they give a popup saying it was and
offering to reload it (and loose any changes you've made in that copy...)

A nice thread ... thanks all.
Nobody mentioned jedit.org, so I will. :) Written in Java, which means it takes a few seconds longer than native apps to open, but OTOH it runs in OSX and Linux as well as Windows.
Free, open source, etc. Like it a lot, have used for 5+ years. Worth spending some time checking out if it sounds interesting.
I tend to use it in parallel with whatever IDE(s) are running, i.e. IAR, MPLAB, VC++, TI CCS. There are no problems with overwritten file changes, everything is smart enough to notice files it has open have changed externally. So I hop between windows and edit in whatever way is convenient at the moment.
