5) Free Copies Of REALbasic

Mr. Langa, With the recent announcement that Microsoft will no
longer support VB6, Real Software is offering REALbasic 5.5.5
Standard Edition to literally any developer interested in having
it. There is a catch, the extended offer from Real Software
     expires on April 15th.

I thought you and your readers would be interested to know. Here
     is the link:
     http://www.realbasic.com/vb6/index.php?id=KGLMGTQV

Here is some information that was emailed to me from Real
     Software:

"Since we started giving away REALbasic keys to Visual Basic
users two weeks ago, more than 10,000 new Windows developers
like you have joined the REALbasic community. Unlike Visual
Basic, REALbasic is fully supported and we will continue to
improve it constantly based on feedback from you, our new
users.... We are so excited by the positive response from the
Visual Basic user community that we have decided to extend our
offer of free REALbasic license keys through April 15, 2005. And
we would like to ask for your help in getting the word out to
more Visual Basic users who might not yet know about REALbasic."
     ...
I hope you find this information useful and will consider it for
     immediate release on the
Langa List. Thank you for your time.

Hope this is useful to someone.

I assume you have to have a VB6 license for this, right?

It doesn't ask for one when you download.  I haven't yet tried to install it.

Correct. It installs just fine.

And for the record: it says "VB users", not "those who own a copy of
Visual Basic". REALbasic are really just giving away their low-end product
to try and capture some marketshare and also gain revenue from upgrades.

Do note: they're giving away a product which will be superseded by
REALbasic 2005 shortly!

Looks cool for cross platform work....

But.... they say they have a Mac, Windows and a Linux version. I can find the Windows and the Mac version but not the Linux version. Have anyone else found where the Linux version can be downloaded.

As far as I know there is no Linux version. Mac and windows only.
the pro version can compile for Linux though.

Linux IDE in the next version, says the website.

Free version only compiles for Windows target.

Thanks Michiel and Bob,

This looks promising and I really would like to test the Linux version. I do a lot of cross platform work today using wxWidgets (http://www.wxwidgets.org/) but sometimes it would have been nice to have something like VB so that you can get things together a bit quicker.

Cheers

You might also want to try Kylix - it's Delphi (Borland's object
Pascal with IDE and widgets) for Linux.

GPL version available for free on Borland's site.

Cheers,

Bob

P.S. If you like Perl, you might also like pqt-Designer, it's QT-
Designer for Perl.

Bob,

Is Kylix GPL now?  I used Turbo Pascal 1.0 in ancient time but since then I haven't looked at Pascal. Any good or bad experiences to share from working with it?
Perl has never won my heart. I can do some small things in it but never liked it very much. It has many nice features but personally I found it a awkward for my needs. Probably because I didn't put in enough efforts to learn in properly....

I will have a look at Kylix. Thanks for the tip.

Cheers

Delphi is Pascal wrapped in a fur coat. I had D3, D5 and now D6, and I
love it.
The later versions (after D7) seem to be written by space aliens, though.

I have been using VB as my RAD tool on WIN32 but have many times looked at Delphi but never did the switch.

I just downloaded Kylix and will check it out.  It's no WIN32 version. Can Kylix compile Delphi code?

They have two versions. One is the Enterprise edition, it is expensive.
The other is the "Open" edition, which is not open source but is free for
GPL projects.

It is very much like Delphi, so anyone who is familiar with Delphi for
Windows will be happy with Kylix, and Delphi projects are compatible as
long as you use controls available in both Kylix and Delphi.

But I am just learning to use it. In general I would say it is easier than
Visual C++ in Windows.

Cheers,

Bob

If you are into C++ wxWidgets is very easy to do cross platform work with.  One just has to be careful to group logic and HMI into separate classes/files.  It will work on Mac as well  but have not tried that. Highly recommended. qt is very good but the license rules for the Windows port has been a big negative thing. Now they have changed that to a dual license so its maybe time to do a switch. Or maybe wait for a qt layer in wxWidgets.

C/C++ is my natural development environment  but sometimes it is nice to do some fast thing in VB just to test an idea out. I miss something like this in Linux/Unix  and can go far to have a RAD that works equally well on WIN32 as on Linux. wxPython mite be the thing to use at least python is very nice IMO. The Kylix/Delphi combination also sound nice.

Yes, as long as you don't use any Windows API calls (e.g. GetTickCount,
QueryPerformanceCounter, etc) in said Delphi code.

Later.

I thought I was pretty good with Turbo 3 but my experience with Delphi 7 has
been humbling.
I don't have any troubles with Console Apps, they look a lot like Turbo 3.
So far, the information & tutorials I have found are either way too simple
or completely over my head!

At this point, I am considering loading up Delphi 3 and trying to get up to
speed there first. Since I own both, it is an option.

Here are a few good Delphi Sites
