I think that it depends whether you have some boilerplate code to build
on and the correct version of standards.
What would be more interesting would be a realistic evaluation of the
CPU support required. I.e. what is the smallest/slowest cpu that will
work with a minimal protocol using this chip. Say, just ARP and ping. Or
even simpler just broadcast 'ping-alikes' with HWADDR as payload (sans
ARP) and listen for same.

That's a good one imho.
Other: it has 32*4 registers to set up. Assuming one is normal and has
an error rate of ~2%, it should take about 10 tries to get it working
for the first time ... any chance that Microchip publish an application
note with a minimal setup to save some time ? There are no application
notes with ENC28... in the title yet. Surely they are using *something*
to test it with ?
Last: has anyone else noticed a large delay and the need to reload when
loading some pages from Microchip today (cca. 2200 UTC 6 Dec. 2005) ?

All I have to say is WOW! Finally I get to play with
the
ethernet interface . I always wanted
ethernet interfaces in my projects but the prices were
unattractive.

I asked sample and will go up to 18f now.
Hope my tons 16f/c code are runnable in 18f.
What I hope for pic is run java me in it, very simple
kind. Long way to go!
Now I am so uncomfortable in 18f3456, this kind of naming, when chosing
correct pic. Peolple can'nt memory 4 digits number well. 3 is maxum.
I really hope microchip use more charaters to mark their
chip and nubmering them is very bad way.
Now, IT system has no any problem to handling
this kind of naming "18F I2C SPI 10ADC 4PWM ExtraECAN SamePrice".
But now, you need make difficult translation/reference from 4 meaningless
digits to the functions you are really paying attention.
I think I am going to send microchip a email, complain about 4 digits
naming.
3 is not enough? Why 4?
