'[EE] Cheapest optocoupler to galvanically separate'
I've been looking on Digikey, and the cheapest ones I could find cost more
than 40 cents in quantity. Can somebody suggest a part number, or some other
search term I should try?

Many optocouplers will probably be too slow for this application but
since I don't know your baud rate I can't say. Avago Tech. has the
"best" digital opto buffers. If you really need high quantities you
should always ask the mfg. reps for prices and not Digikey. I just saw
a 4N35 variant for $.19 in thousands, but it's almost certainly too
slow for you.
