2) Possible solution: Use more than one IR LED stacked in series.
Use a separate
battery set with a voltage larger than the combined drop of the
LEDs. If you use
5 LEDs that would be 5 Volts drop. ( Assumming your IR LEDs drop 1V
each, which
is hard to believe ). Use your PIC to drive a FET transistor that
turns on the string of LEDs.
All LEDs now share the same current and only one limiting resistor
need be used.
3) Using lenses is good idea. Start with a visible LED with the
same half power angle as your
IR LED. Now you can experiment with lenses that will make the beam
more directional.
( this may require a darkened room ) The receiver may benefit from
a tube with flat black interior
that is pointed at the LED transmitter. This will reduce
interference from the sun and reflections.
