Hi to all,

I am working on 4x40 character display and I like to
know how to create bit letters or digits on it. Any idea ?
I know serial lcds do that but my application is 4 bit parallel.
thanks in advance

Define up some user defined chars to act as character bits (like / \ - | ,
think chunky triangles) and generate big chars in software by drawing these
chunks in.  Bit of work but doable.

You need first to understand how to create custom characters on the LCD.  Create
8 characters which can form corners and sides of larger characters.  See
SEETRON.com for examples of the characters they use for their big display.

You can't do it on a standard character LCD module. You can't use the
user-defined characters to make parts of big letters as there are only
8 characters that are defineable, and there will be gaps between the
lines. If you want big chars you either need a large-format character LCD or
a graphic display module.

Best Andre,

You have by now recieved several good and clearifying answers, as I came back. Like you find, the letters need a bit of detail to be clear, and the special caracters mode would apply.
My idéa is that you would need more special char's. than 8. But, you would have to REDEFINE these as you go-along. The display doesn't change, once data is written into the RAM of the display.

You can't do this, as the CG RAM is used dynamically during display
refresh. There is no bitmap display RAM - only the character buffer,
which is passed through CG RAM or ROM in real time to generate the
pixel patterns
If you redefine a character that is currently onscreen, it will change
immediately.

characters, such as, solid blocks and diagonaly split blocks to make
smoothish corners on the fonts.  It won't look overly special, but it will
work.

Unfortunately this won't work.  The display has NO graphic ram.  In other words,
you are allowed to define 8 of the 256 characters in the character generator
ROM/RAM.  When the display refreshes, it matches the display ram (80 bytes) byte
by byte to the character generator ROM/RAM and spits out the character to the
display.  If you write the 8 user defined characters to the display, then change
their definitions, they will change on the display.

Are you sure of this ? When we are talking about a display that uses a
44780 compatible controller ?
