This is one thing that annoys me about eagle too. They assume you
know all the library parts well. What I do is go to add a component
in the BOARD editor, and check it out. This lets you find the right
component in some cases but won't let you add it. But once you know
if the part is right you can remember the number and go back into
the schematic editor and then add the right part. I know this sounds
pretty bodgy but I am used to it now and can get some good
productivity out of the package. I think it's because Eagle evolved
from a more "command" based cad system it is not too instinctive.
I keep meaning to learn all the "power" typed command stuff but
never have the time and I can use the graphical interface to make
small boards quick and easy now so it doesn't really matter to me.

Bothered me a lot too. Spend 10 minutes hunting down a part. They really
need to tell people where to get the files. You can find a pdf file (which
is around 10MB) with all the footprints and symbols and also they give you
circuit boards and schematics with all the footprints and symbols too. Go to
the websites ftp or user/3rd party files and look there for them.

355pac_pdf.zip, 355dev.zip, 355pac.zip
eaglelist.zip & libedit.zip are ulp's to print out your libraries

Maybe you could give a try to Version 4 beta. Actually called 3.92r0.
Among other things, you can now browse in the libraries and see the
parts: symbol and footprint . Great improvement.
