Hi All,
Has anyone had to deal with the Sony A1 link that is used in
their HI-FI equipment? It is used to link together the tape deck
& CD player,etc to enable functions such as CD-Syncro,etc.
I want to know if all of the cassette decks functions are available
via this link instead of via the IR remote control. All of the info I've
found on the web so far is either incomplete or plain wrong!

If Sony will give you a spec, then you have something to work with.
Otherwise, welcome to the wonderful world of reverse engineering.  A few
years ago on another job, I was part of a team that hooked a computer up to
some Pioneer CD players via their equivalent proprietary bus.  We requested
info from Pioneer and got nothing, so we basically wound up recording the
waveforms of the small number of signals we needed.

The next year and each subsequent model year, there were just enough design
changes that we had to do the whole thing over again.  I suspect that the
reason they wouldn't release any documentation was that they didn't have it
themselves.  What they must have been doing when they wanted to put a new
feature in a new product, they lined up a bunch of their old equipment in a
lab and fired random data at them until they found something that didn't
bother too many of the existing ones.

Hi Don,
I actually have a Pioneer 101 disc CD player here too. Did you use the control
connectors (3.5mm) on the rear panel to control it in your case? I'd like
to know
if you can get status from those same ports as well. I can control the
player via
the IR port but getting status if proving to be quite tricky.

We hooked our stuff up via the control connectors.  We discovered several
things:
1) The control connectors are simply another way into the same interface as
the I/R.
2) Like the I/R, the control interface is one-way.
3) The protocols change at least as often as the model numbers (which is
pretty frequent).

What the engineer on this project settled on was to build a gizmo that could
easily record the signals from the remote controller, and play them back.
That way, whenever a new model came out, he could just record the small
group of commands he needed for his application, and burn them into a new
ROM, which went into the units delivered to customers.  Basically, each time
you press a button on the controller, a big long string of pulses comes out,
which is generally unique to a particular button.
