One caveat on trying to use two mercury switches for this; not all mercury switches are 'tilt'
switches, a lot of them detect 'vibration'. In other words they are designed to detect movement in
any direction, so make sure you are not using this sort.

hmm, the switch designed as a tiny container with two metallic pins in the bottom should work fine.
Don't forget that the PIC can do some filtering on the signals and I think that should suffice just
fine.
