What is the maximum distance for serial connections, before the signal
degrades, etc.?

IIRC, the specification is 2500pF capacitance so, it depends on the cables
capacitance per foot.

I have gone 16 feet with no problem.

That dependson a LOT of different things:

       What serial connection? RS-232? I2C?
       What baud rate?
What type of cable? Sheiled, twisted, etc?
What environment? Industrial, indoor, outside, etc?
What kind of error detection/correction is involved?

In a data center I'm intimately familiar with, we use centrally located
terminal servers for serial console connections to UNIX servers.  Cable
lengths of over 300' using Cat5 cable via patch panels, etc are commonly
used with no problems whatsoever.  This is at 9600BPS.  YMMV.
