What type of cable? Sheiled, twisted, etc? What environment? Industrial, indoor, outside, etc? What kind of error detection/correction is involved? In a data center I'm intimately familiar with, we use centrally located terminal servers for serial console connections to UNIX servers. Cable lengths of over 300' using Cat5 cable via patch panels, etc are commonly used with no problems whatsoever. This is at 9600BPS. YMMV.
