Does anybody know an easy and cheap way to use a PC Serial port, which is RS-232, to listen only to data comming from a RS-485 device?  I don't need to send data back, only recieve.
thanks

Use something like B&B's RS485-RS232 converters.

Or take a DS275 and an LTC1485 and a perf board - it's cheap and easy.

You'll hate this... get an RS232-TTL converter... and gang it with a
RS485-TTL converter ;)
Maxim has both and they're relatively cheap

I am not sure if you are wanting to roll your own circuit here, but if you go
to the Melab site and get the PDF file for the PIC X! it has all the
connections for both a 232 and the 485. It also shows the two connected
together. I am not sure if this cold be used as a converter but the two chips
are very inexpensive and might be a good starting point.

This is just a thought,  I have not tried this one
