I run murata resonators at 16 MHz on 16c74's all the time. These are the three pin version (built-in capacitors). I've never been able to get anyone else's (other than murata) to work reliably. We've made hundreds with the 16.0MHz and 16F84/20, 16F84A/20 and with never a problem... We use the 2 pin type resonator, +2 22pF ceramic caps. I keep the resonator real close to the PIC, and the ceramics one on each side, and good earthing. What problems have you had? In fact the only startup problems I have seen was trying to run a 16F877 at 3.3volts using a 4MHz resonator. It wouldn't start reliably until I selected the HS fuses instead of XT. I admit that I didn't play with it very hard, but just went over to using xtals for > 8mhz, and never seen a problem there. Possibly the correct choice of resonator, as Harold indicated, or more fiddling with layout/etc would solve it. Thanks Dan. We have only used the one Murata brand, and not had any problems.
