I can't find the thread but recently in a discussion of distributors
someone mentioned that Mouser seemed to be doing a better job than DigiKey.
Been a while since I've been to the Mouser web site so just saw this:
http://www.mouser.com/Pdfdocs/PressRoomTTIBerkshireSaleClosing.pdf
TTI, INC. ANNOUNCES THE CLOSING OF ITS ACQUISITION BY
BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY
FORT WORTH, TEXAS î º MARCH 30, 2007 î º TTI, Inc., the world’s leading passive and
connector specialist, announced today the closing of its acquisition by Berkshire Hathaway Inc.
making TTI and its affiliate Mouser Electronics part of the Berkshire Hathaway Group, whose
Chairman and CEO is Warren Buffet.
<snip>
You never hear about the dogs that Warren Buffet buys so I assume this
speaks pretty highly of Mouser. :-)

I've always been a fan of Mouser...for the last 20 years or so. They will sample some parts as well...which is nice. Pricing, least for those things I purchase, has always been better than DigiKey, but there are exceptions of course. Shipping...lots of options from cheap USPS to overnight. And the search engine is good...as good or better than Digikey. Im just a satisfied customer with em.

I'm partial to Newark. Pretty good service and many more types of parts
available.

Can you elaborate on the search engine part? I've always found
Mouser's search engine almost useless when I didnt' have exact part
numbers already. Maybe I'm doing it wrong. For example, how would I
find the in-stock 5V rail-to-rail op-amp with the lowest quiescent
current using Mouser's search engine?

Easy. Use Digikeys search engine first. Then use findchips.com to see
who's got the parts. Mousers poor search engine is one reason I tend to
forget looking at them as a rule. In addition to being primarily only
useful for entering part numbers, it is often slooooowwwwwww. Their IT
department head just doesn't get it.

I guess I dont use it that way....just for parts, if I have a number. I use the vendors websites if I am looking for a specific chip. R and C's have a pretty good par down search I think.

Download the pdf catalog and search that.
Much easier than web searches.

I get the paper catalog every 90 days, and frequently use that for part
numbers, and then from the part web page, display the catalog page to
refine the part number.
Usually my small (hobbiest) orders have an item that is only stock at
one place, and the rest goes along for the ride. Have had no problems
with Digikey (minimum order not good) , Mouser, or Jameco, but have used
Arrow, Newark where there stock is available. For consumer issues like
CATV, SATV, security, audio, etc. MCM Electronics in Southwest Ohio is a
division of Newark is OK. They all have shipped promptly with next to
none problems. I usually order on the web, but phone occasionally.
For shipping I have found US postal priority with tracking (only useful
if package not delivered, and that hasn't happened yet) has been
reliable 2 days from anywhere in the country and the price is in range
of UPS ground). If I place the order Thursday before noon (or sometimes
later), 90% of the time the postman (lady usually) has it in our box
Saturday before noon. Also Fedex residential delivery runs Saturday but
not Monday. Sometimes can play that game to get Saturday delivery. :)

yknow one thing that i've been noticing but its not clear why (and im
scared to ask)
Whenever I order more than, say $100 worth of stuff, and select ups
ground shipping, they "Automatically upgrade" it to 2-day UPS
shipping.
Anybody else get this when they order?

Was the package marked 2 day, or did UPS decide to route 2 day due to
light load on their aircraft going your way, saving on surface
transportation by others (rail)? Could have just been a glitch in the
Mouser system too. Ask Mouser and UPS what's going on. I have found
similar with Fedex too.

I user Mouser often, and they will often do this.
One reason I have heard is that if it is too late
in the day when they ship, they send it 2nd day
because they missed the cutoff for ground. I tend
to order in the evening anyway, so this happens
to me quite a bit. No, I'm not complaining!
FWIW, many years ago (early 1990s) I tried Mouser
a few times, and really hated them. Back then,
they had this habit of dribbling your order out
in several shipments, charging you for each of
them. Now, if there's a backorder, the
backordered items are shipped for free. I've
pretty much dropped DigiKey, and use Mouser and
Jameco for most of my parts orders. I was using
Saelig for FTDI USB UARTs, but Mouser started
carrying them about a year ago. Saelig does have
an interesting assortment of stuff, mostly
test/dev equipment from Euroland.

When I started, I would price shop among the distros. Now, I just order
from Mouser since they do seem to know what they are doing, and I'm
generally happy with their price and customer service.
One hint... if you're purchasing something on a regular basis (for
instance, I know I'm going to need 50 of a certain connector every month
for the next year), you can do a scheduled release PO and they'll not
only automatically ship/bill you for the devices, but they will also set
up their "upstream" orders so that they will meet your deadline. This
is also true of "non-stocked" items.

No its definitely happening every single time and its marked as "2 day
air" on the service sticker.

I am not sure what started this discussion as I am coming in at the
end of the thread ... but I deal with Mouser a couple of times a
week, and if your order is over $100 it gets UPS 3 day shipping at
ground rate and if it is over $200 its gets UPS 2nd Day shipping at
ground rate .... these upgrades are supposed to be automatic but I
always say something and make sure.

1. Find doesn't care about font. ;-)
2. At 150-200%, the print is more than readable.
Digi-key I have to go to 300%.
3. The Mouser pdf hot links to the on-line
ordering system. Nice. And that links to
the data sheets. Also nice.
