I never could figure this out:  Who is the genius that
came up with the cylindrical package to be soldered
to my flat board?

I was reminded when I saw the MELF package in the SMT guide.

I believe someone makes a MELF like package that is octagonal, maybe
hexagonal.
I think the round MELF package comes from equipment meant for leaded
component manufacture.
