MAX7221 8 digit x 8 segment LED display driver May be well known to many but just introduced to me by a friend. Where the micro is too busy etc, here's an 8 x 8 LED display driver capable of driving 8 x 8 segment displays or 64 individual LEDs. Even more than this with some extra effort. 3 wire serial interface. Not overly cheap at $US5.63 from Digikey. If the LEDs are scattered around the board it starts to use up real estate running the tracks. I have a board with 3 of those 10 led bargraphs and not much space. The TI Power logic shift registers (US$0.83) are a good solution there.
