All,

I am going to be developing a proprietry serial interface to a piece of
hardware using an RS232/UART mechanism.

Is anybody aware of a simple 'RS232 Monitor' box that I can fit inline to
help debug/decode the binary data being exchanged?

thanks,
SW.

There is a simple program called Serial Watcher.  I can send it to you if
you'd like.  It works well and is reasonably versatile.  It displays the
characters being sent over the serial port on the screen.  Email
spam_OUTm010468TakeThisOuTspamusna.edu if you want it.

I had something called MICROTAP once.  It used a seperate computer to
monitor the 232 port of the computer to be monitored.  That is it would go
in series with the computer sending the data and the device receiving the
data.  you could decode to ascii or just look at hex or bin, and then you
could monitor and change the status lines.

Hi,

look at http://www.dunfield.com, and search for dlmxxx (Data Line Monitor, xxx is
the version number). It works under pure DOS as I use it also.

Imre

Check here for a free serial/parallel Port Monitor.  May not be simple, but
sounds quite capable.  I have not used it.

Not alone will it listen to what goes on at the com port, but it can be used
between 2 different devices to monitor traffic between them. ie you connect
device 1 to COM 1 of your PC and device 2 to COM2. Data between device 1 and
device 2 is passed through your PC and the data displayed on the screen in
different colors depending on which device sent it. As you can see I'm a fan
of this software.

I think however that the origional poster of this thread wanted a Dos
monitor.....
