'[EE]: Logic Analyzer'

I have the opportunity to purchase a HP Logic Analyzer. I majoring in
Computer Engineering and I familiar with embedded systems but have never
used a Logic Analyzer before. I figure that the only use I would have for
this equipment would be to troubleshoot some complex system.
Those who a familiar with this equipment would you clarify the
particulars as to why I should or shouldn't purchase this type of equipment.
I already have a TDS-210 digital oscilloscope, frequency counter and
other types of test equipment, but I'm open to suggestions from those with
some hands on experience.

About 5 years ago I bought a HP1630 logic analyser to use as a digital
scope. Occasionally I use the logic inputs for timing analysis. Mostly
I just use it as a fast low res scope. One big drawback is that it is
loud.

A logic analyzer is a tool very similar to an emulator in application.
If you have one it will sit under the bench and never get used. If you
don't have one, every problem that you have will require the use of a
logic analyzer to diagnose.

My most common application for a LA is to trigger a scope. The
TDS-210 is a bit limited in the triggering department so you may
find it makes that tool a bit more useful. The statement above still
holds though.
Steve.
