I'm looking to build a small serial port based IR transmitter for controlling a cable TV box...something similar to the schematics for lIRC. Any recommendations on a decent T1 or T13/4 sized IR LED that would be available from Digikey? Obviously needs to be something relatively low powered as it's being driven from a serial port (which a suitable capacitor acting as a charge pump). Randy at Glitchbuster.com sells "T1-3/4 IR LED/emitter, like: RS 276-143" for 37 cents. He even says it's like that Radio Shack one :). I bought 2 and they are fine for your use. His shipping is quite low at a flat $1.85, so if you buy 2 you're already ahead of buying 2 at Radio Shack, and he has great prices on a lot of pic-related items. Jason {Original Message removed}

In particular, I use the LNA2802 (T-1 size) in a couple projects and it works very well with Vishay or Panasonic IR receivers. I run 11ma (though the datasheet says it can use quite a bit more) thru the LNA2802 and get decent range (I tested to over 10ft).
