'[EE]: High Current Power Supply'

Hello,
Thanks to everyone who replied to my request for info on a variable voltage,
high current power supply.  I'm still looking into the matter, but now I've
changed my requirements a little.

I need a supply outputting 12V that can handle ~8A (it's for s fuel pump).
The power can be 'dirty' I guess...since we've used a battery before.  I
also need a supply outputting 1.5-12V (as high as 15V would be nice, but not
required), that can handle about 4A.  This second supply is just driving a
single fuel injector for a 600cc motorcycle engine (modified for injection).
I suspect that 4A is much more than actually required, but that is what I've
been told I should shoot for.

Can anyone suggest anything for either supply?  I guess a computer power
supply seems pretty good for the first one...but is that the best cheap
method (I have some old supplies, but it'll take a bit to get ahold of em).

Thanks a lot,
Dave

Dave,

If you can lay hands on a used one, try the old Heathkit IP-2715 "Battery
Eliminator".  I've used one for more years than I can remember. It's
regulated, variable voltage, metered, and handles up to 20~25A
intermittently...
