'[EE]: Good solder recomendation'

Hello,

Recently I spent few days doing soldering of PCB's with surface mount
components (TSSOP, 0603, PQFP240, etc) and it occurred to me that maybe
I should get a better solder (that is, the disposable 'wire' used for
soldering, not the solder iron itself).

The one I used was Radio Shack 64-035 which is 0.015 diameter, 62/36/2
'High Tech Solver Bearing Solder', whatever this means.

Is there a better solder that will make my life easier ?

Any other trick that will help me soldering those find components (BTW,
I am using a microscope we purchased on eBay and I don't think I could
do that fine job without it).

Thanks,

Tal

I use the 0.22" diameter silver solder...and it works good for me :-)

Don't you find it a little, um...thick?

I use an Antex XS-25 25W soldering iron with a 2.5mm chisel tip. Multicore
60/40 Sn/Pb solder with the "Ersin" flux seems to work quite well for me.
Unfortunately the iron keeps overheating and ripping up tracks. I think I
need to go out and buy a temperature controlled iron...
Anyone care to suggest a nice, sub-100 pounds (that's Pounds Sterling, i.e.
GBP) soldering station? I've been looking at a few of the Antex ones but
they seem to start at nearly £200...

Later.

Check out RS. They have the Weller WS51 soldering station at £138.85, cat
#307-9598. This has a calibrated knob for temperature adjustment. There is
also a digital display version at almost £200. Both take the same irons, and
for surface mount work there is a tweezer available for dealing with
resistors and capacitors. makes life a breeze for these, although it is
expensive. Check out the WTA50, RS # 359-6071 at £147.48 plus stand, RS
#405-3402 at £41.38 !!!!!!

You may be able to source similar items from farnell. Worth having a look,
but I use these at work and they are ideal.

Phil,

I'm in the US and cannot obtain the Multicore solder you mention is no
longer available here. I've been using this stuff for the past 20+ years and
it has no equal.  My understanding is that it is readily available in
England.  Any chance of obtaining any thru you or can you point me to a
distributor (website)?,

Thanks in advance,

Chuck

You can get a metcal SP-200 on ebay for less than that. Tips average about $5US.

The Weller WTCP series is nice too, at about half that cost.

I have used the WTS51 for a year now and am very happy with it. However,
sometimes I wish it would have a smaller tip that the 1/64" ETS.
