agreed!
I have been using these things for a few months now (qt110 and qt112 mostly), and they are indeed fantastic! Easy and
effective and cheap. I found out about them through postings on the basic stamp list.
I am so fond of them that if anyone has any questions to post i will do my best to answer them!

They are pre-programmed PICs, right?

Would they have a proximity sensor for a 50 cm range or more ?

I need to measure proximity in such a range.

That's what it looked like to me also, Spehro...

The VDD and VSS pins are in the right places. ;-)

Check on Scott's and our web site for information on touch
switch technology.

The customs slip on one of my QProx orders even showed that the parts
(QT11x series) were orginally sourced from Microchip in AZ...

Naysayers:
are they pics? i never thought of that (i'm young yet) but i don't think so. They run on too little current and the people at qprox say that they are custom silicon.
You be the judge...(read the spec sheet)

Marcelo:

i've gotten about 18cm out of a qt113 with a large wire mesh for an electrode,  and my guess is that they could be pushed to about twice that
if you're clever. If you push them that far, make sure your power supply is super stable.

you could probably do better with the fancy industrial versions (much more expensive and complicated)
good luck-

For Walter's:

http://www.bytecraft.com/touch.html

For mine? I don't have any thing about touch sensing on my personal Web
page. However, my employer Synaptics, the market leader for TouchPads, has
quite a bit: http://www.synaptics.com/ .

I'd really be surprised if the QProx devices are just PICs with the part
number scraped off. More likely they've licensed MicroChip's core along
with some proprietary circuitry and have contracted with Microchip to
produce it. This is just a WAG; but it's an educated WAG. Detecting a
single touch *is* straight forward. However, producing a design that is
robust to variations in numerous parameters is not easy. In our touchpads,
we go through numerous details to ensure robustness. This is obvious if
you've ever looked closely at one of our designs. Although, we can
actually not just detect touch, but, more importantly, where the touch
occurred. It's not a trivial problem.

As a related aside, does anybody have an application where they'd like to
use capacitive touch sensing to resolve position? I have my nose to the
engineering grindstone, but occasionally have my ear against the marketing
wall.

Microchip like all other companies with a foundry rent out their excess
capacity to fabless companies like Qprox. Even if they do not have excess
capacity it may be more lucrative to manufacture someone else's chip design
than their own.
