'[EE]: EL backlight circuit'

On a similar note to the CCFL post has anybody got a URL for an EL backlight
circuit.
I think I've worked out that I need about 120V (AC ?) from an inverter unit
to supply a EL sheet of approximate size 100mm*80mm.
The inverter can run from 5v->20V and to get about 120->150V out of it I
need about a 12V input supply.
Now do I just buy one of these inverters, give it 12V and connect the 120V
output to the EL?
I'm a bit worried of the 120V (large number!), I guess it's very low
current. Why such large voltages?
So a URL or a circuit idea would be great.
Also they seem to be big devices and I'm trying to design a ultra slim
control panel. Are there such things as SMD (surface mount) inverters?
Regards
Pete
