Has anybody used any of these devices with a PIC?  We're having all kinds
of fun -

the DS1306 xtal doesn't appear to be oscillating
the values read back out of the chip don't make any sense

I haven't gotten to test the MAX and ADC parts yet - hopefully they will be
cleaner.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

DS1306 is an RTC if I remember right. If tis then the clock wont start
until a bit in the control reg is set and then it works properly was
bout 3 yrs ago I was playing with one ov these .

Do you have the lithium cell connected?  I understand the 1306 & 1307
won't work without it.  Going to test that on mine later this weekend, I
was wondering why I got the same thing until I saw a post about the same
problem on the CCS C user forum.

Howdy Andy! It's been awhile since I used a MAX3100 with a PIC but I
had an application using a remote sensor that sent data at 115Kbaud
using 9-Bit addressing. All I can say is the MAX3100 worked as
advertized using a simple `bit-banged' SPI interface. I was working
from data sheet 19-1259; Rev 0; 7/97.

As far as the DS1306, I've used similar parts and they always had a
configuration bit to start the oscillator.

Hi Tom!

I got both working later on.  Just have to use the right SPI mode and have
the technicial glue the xtal down right!

Hi Andy,
we used the MAX3100 in some projects. Works just prefectly. Though, we
didn't use PICs, we had AVRs in that project. Should make no difference
for the MAX, I guess.

regards,
  Reelf

It's an SMT one, long rectangle shape (ECS-306 series, see Digikey).  It
has a sloped end on pin 1 side, and a single dot at the other end.  He put
the dot to pin 1 location on the board.  I can see why he was confused.

Hi,
Andy Kunz wote:

Well the MAX3100 is used by an current project, it works
basiclly as advertized however I have major objections regarding
the IRQ function. My handler for the uart was an isr based piece of
code,
and used an documented feature where one can abort the 16 bit spi
transfer
after the first 2 bits ( rx/tx buffers status ) if one was so inclined
(i.e. the tx was empty and I had no more bytes to send, and the rx was
empty).
I never really got it working the way I assumed it would. I had to
write the code in an extremly ugly way ( an loop inside the isr handler ) as the
irq pin from the uart, in some cases never triggered the int pin of the pic.

Now these problem could be caused by either my assumptions, my code, or
something
relating to pic int pin and the MAX3100 int pin.
However, the way it's written now it has never failed me or caused any
side effects.

I think I even have some pseudo code that I can share.

/Tony

I did the same as well, but it runs pretty quick so I don't mind.

The problem I had with getting it to start talking right away was that the
IRQasn't being generated at initial startup to send a character.  After you
put a char into the software queue (to feed the ISR) you need to enable the
Transmit Empty IRQ bit from the character buffer-writer.  You only need to
do it if this is the first char in the buffer.  After that, the ISR handles
it OK.

This was a really slick chip to get working.  I like it!  It'll end up more
designs, for sure.  I used the basic framework for the ISR that I use for
the on-PIC UART.

Tomorrow morning I start on the ADC chip.  It should be pretty straightforward.
