Thank you!  I am inundated with useful information, which is where I love
to be.  Too bad public school wasn't like this.

I know how you feel; I'm a Hardware Engineer starting a S.W. engineer's
job in two weeks.  At least I used to teach 68000 Assembly in the early
90's so I'm not completely a fish out of water, but more like an old
rusty nail.
I'm in a race become an expert in PIC's, and 8051's in as short a time
as possible.  Myke Predko's books really got me started again into
programming small microcontrollers.  In fact, they got me the new job
because I was able to build a demonstration 8051 project that nailed me
the job during the interview.  Without the internet and those books, I
would have had no chance to survive the rapid changes in engineering
today.

Don't be disheartened, Steve, I got my present job on the strength of
having completed ONE hobby pic project that I never really finished and
didn't ever really work.  "Do you know anything about microcontrollers?"
"Sure" I said, as my teeth chattered and I messed my pants.  "I'm an ..
ah...  expert".   Since nobody else they interviewed knew a thing about
them, they hired me.

Spent the next several weeks cramming my brain full day and night.

You have just given a good example of what an "expert" is,

an EX is a has-been, and a SPERT is a drip under pressure. 8>)

I always knew it as X - the unknown, and Spert, a drip etc. :))

Much the same... but I guess it depends if you've been married before :)
