Sounds to me like a good way of having a silent burglar alarm on the car,
once you have the wireless LAN. Transmit an alarm message across the LAN to
a PC in the house to ring an alarm beside your bed.

I think there is already such a system on the market.
If I am not misstaken its called "Car-link" and is part of a antiburglar
system. Its basically a RF link that keeps quiet as long as
your car is in range and nothing in the car triggers any sensors.

There quite probably is, I was just surmising that having got an MP3 system
with a wireless NIC to download new files, the effort involved in adding a
burglar alarm feature would be very small, the hardest part would be the
alarm hardware for the car. But then this may be just a microswitch on a
door to create a break condition on a serial line to trigger an interrupt on
the processor.......
