'[EE]: Boardmaker Dongle'

Hi All,

I own the Boardmaker 2 (V2.6) PCB layout software, using a dongle.
After 2 house moves within one year I lost the dongle, I know, my fault. The
manufacturer, Tsien in the UK, only wants to sell me a new dongle for 70% of
the full package which amounts to some 500$ US, which really, really knocked
me out. I have original invoices, reg numbers so I can prove I bought it
from them. But there was no discussion possible.
Boardmaker is a DOS program, and I have since switched to Proteus (look Ma,
no dongle!), but still have designs in Boardmaker I need to modify or work
on. I am now forced to redesign these layouts or shell out 500$ US for
something I already paid, very frustrating.
So my question really is, has anybody still lying a Boardmaker dongle
around, or is it possible to work without the dongle? What other options do
I have?

Thanks, Jan Didden

Get your solicitor to send them a letter.
You will probably get a new dongle within
a few days.

Is a solicitor what we Americans would call a lawyer?

I also use Boardmaker2 and also the schematic package from the same company,
boardcapture. I have had a lot of problems with the dongles and have had a
few replacements, but many of the problems are still there. Sometimes, in
the middle of an operation the program loses communication with the dongle,
and you lose your work!.
Apart from the dongle I still like the package, but it is very
frustrating. I have often thought about trying to make it work without the
dongle, but I doubt if I could do it. Morally I would not have a problem as
I have paid for 3 packages and Tsien will not fix the problem.
There is another way out for you, get Boardmaker 1, it runs without a
dongle and will read your layout files, but has no netlist facilities.

I too use Boardmaker (V2.732) and don't have unreliability problems with
the dongle.  Just a thought, are you running under Windows or pure DOS?  If
Windows 95/98 then check your printer port settings.  Go to Control Panel
and click on your printer. Click on Properties then Details then Port
Settings.  Make sure that Windows doesn't spool DOS print jobs. If that
isn't the problem, then I don't know what it is.

Tsien are trying to migrate Version 2 users to Boardmaker 3, but only seem
to offer a software lease arrangement which I am not keen on.

Feel free to contact me directly if you need more help.

I use PCB by Omation. Old program that uses the PADS engine.  I used to
burn up the dongle every few months. They told me the last time that I
would have to shell out about $4500 if it burned up again. They later
changed to another cad engine for their software and did away with the
dongle.  However, I digress, we had some boards that were done off site
and all we had were the schematics, check plot, and the boards. I
managed to get a copy of the gerber files from the board house and found
a program called EASYPC. It was from a company across the big lake over
in th UK.  Only a couple hundred for schematic and pcb programs.  Good
feature is that it would allow you to take the gerber file in and
re-create your board so that it could be edited and updated as needed.
Don't know if they are still in business but you might look.

Yes it is. The term "solicitor", used in Commonwealth countries, is
much to be preferred over Americans' use of "lawyer" because the
precise meaning of the verb "to solicit" is to accost, to make immoral
request or offer, to pester by begging. The noun "solicitation" means
the act of soliciting in the streets for immoral purposes. There is an
offence of "soliciting", meaning to procure women for the purposes of
prostitution.

It's obvious that this association of the word "solicitor" with vice,
immorality & prostitution is so much more accurately evocative of the
work practices & "ethics" of the legal profession than the misnomer
"lawyer". One hopes its usage may be taken up by our American friends!
