Hi

I am limited by mechanical restrictions in a project.  A LCD module with a
mechanical width of 40mm or less must be used.  I got hold of a OPTREX
DMC-50448 character LCD module (8 char by 2 line), which is not standard
with backlight, a requirement for the project.
http://www.optrex.co.jp/us/lcd_us/DMC/dmc_50448.html.

After e-mailing OPTREX I did not receive any answer from them requesting if
they can supply the module with backlight.

How easy is it to add backlight?  Comments of similar experiences and
solutions are welcome.

Thanks

Nearly impossible.  The retention cover has to be pretty carefully aligned
to maintain proper compression on the LCD's on-glass contacts.  Even if you
were able to hack up a module, I think you would find that it wouldn't be
very reliable.

I would recommend looking for a display manufactured with a backlight.  How
about Okaya's 8x2 at http://www.okaya.com/RC0802-A.html or perhaps Occular's
at http://www.ocularlcd.com/ocular9.htm. Hantronix has a small form factor
8x2 at  http://www.hantronix.com/dwnc.htm.  Data International has an 8x2 a
