Hi
just to check if any one have any experience in using the MAX 232 chip with
a voltage source of 3.3 instead of 5 Volt

Regards

Not sure if the MAX232 is rated for 3V, I suspect it is only 5V

Use the MAX3232E instead. IIRC pin compatible, and definitely allowed to run
at 3V.

Use the 3.3V part, MAX3232 IIRC. TTYL

If you read the data sheet for MAX232 available at http://www.maxim-ic.com/
it very clearly states that the MAX232 is 5 volt only.

I was think when the voltage is at 5volts the voltage double on board the
Max 232 will create a +10V and -10V
when i use 3.3 V the value is at +-6.6volt.

I think as long as the PC accept the value of the output then the data can
be read. any way the RS232 protocol will not only work at +-10V but at a
range

-5 to -15 Volts             5 -to 15   Volts

therefore as long as the volt produce is between the acceptable range i
think is safe.

If you do not believe the specs provided by the manufacturer of the chip
then why are you using that manufacturers product?

If the MAX232 worked fine at 3.3V over time/temperature/output load/etc...
don't you think Maxim would say so? They certainly could sell more chips if
they did say so.

I have had problems with the MAX232 at high speeds below 3.5 v

I am currently using 3.3 V at 19200 baud what baud rate are you using?
