What could be used to convert old .SCH files into something newer (image
if it has to be but preferrably vector format) ?

Depends what CAD package produced it. EAGLE uses .sch as an extension, Protel
EasyTrax and Autotrax did, the list goes on.

That's why I'm asking. I have some ancient SCH files and they seem to be
some form of ascii text format mixed with some binary.

I can check if they are Protel SCH files if you want me to. Believe it or not the
latest Protel does not import the oldest Protel schematics correctly. I use
Protel 99 to read these, convert, then open in Protel DXP 2004.

I use power logic that it takes .sch and ascii format file
If I can open it then I can save it as pdf format.
