Hello, I've been learning orcad lately and I'm having two very frustrating problems. 1. How do I Turn off all the extraneous text? I only want it to show a resistor name say "R2", not that it's a "0805" and a resistor. :) 2. and how do I make a board only double layer not 4 layer? I just click on the value not the part, then right click on the pink highlight. Click on "Edit properties" and a menu will pop up and you can set it to invisible or other. I'm still looking for an initial default so I don't have to do it to every part. Rick "A.J. Not sure about the layers though. I don't use this version much unless I'm doing subcontract work for a company I work for and they require this program. Thanks for your help Rick. I got so frustrated I just deleted the text from the footprint. :P To solve the layer thing I just editied the layer and changed it to no route. You probably just want to make the whole layer invisible. Thanks Spehro, I just noticed also that every part appears on both the top and bottom layers. Do I have to actually edit the footprint (and delete the specific unwanted layer) of every part to only have it appear on one layer? There may be bits of a part on various layers, but each entity is on one layer at a time (or the global layer). In the case of pins, you have to edit the padstacks or create new ones to have them appear on only one side, they typically have bits on each possible routing layer. Normally you want pads on both sides, though, or you can just not output the top layer if you want. Spehro, I'm trying to use SMD components. When I created the padstacks I did it by the method described in the help file. I went, select from spreadsheet then esc then new. Created it the size I wanted etc. The problem I having is the pad appears on all layers and since it's smd I want it only on the topmost layer. To get rid of the pad on layers where you don't want it (all the others for an SMT padstack), just set Pad Shape to "Undefined" for those layers. Best regards, Spehro Pefhany --"it's the network..." If it is a surfacemount component, use a footprint for surfacemount. If its throughmount use a throughtmount footprint. If you use a surfacemount footprint it will only appear on the side you place the component in layout. And ofcourse througmount components will be on both sides. One of the properties allows you to select which side of the board the component mounts. This allows you to force it to the reverse side - the entry is probably blank initially. Look for the heading "COMPSIDE" and put "BOT" in the field. Check Help for the options for the field. P.S. I forgot to add to this that if you right click on the headings in this properties page it will select all fields in that column and allow you to edit them all at once - useful to change a bunch of components from top to bottom at the same time. You can also use this page to deal with your other request - turning off the display of fields. Hi, Chose the tools "pin", and click on your pad, in the tool bar you see the ICON look same spreadsheet click and go to the PADSTACK, Select all layer you don't need, make "CRTL+E" and select "Undefined" in the box "Pad Shape" Denis PS: escuse for my english {Original Message removed}

Patrick, Just go into the footprint editor and create a new padstack in the manner described in my last mssage (obviously of the dimensions you want). Then simply double-click on the padstack you want changed and select the new padstack.
